Private Equity & Investment
St. Thomas Street Investments is a private equity and long term capital allocator and investment firm.
Who We Are
St. Thomas Street Investments is a private equity and investment firm that takes a long-term, partnership-oriented approach to backing businesses with durable competitive advantages. We combine deep operational expertise with patient capital, working alongside management teams to build lasting value.
With a presence in both Johannesburg and London, we occupy a distinctive position at the intersection of African growth markets and international capital. Our portfolio spans healthcare, financial services, payments, food and consumer — sectors where we have built genuine expertise over two decades.
We are not a fund manager in the traditional sense. We are investors who take an active interest in the businesses we back, contributing strategic insight, governance and network alongside our capital.
Investment Strategy
We are deep value investors, focused on businesses with strong competitive advantages, the ability to scale and grow organically, and a consistent track record of delivering strong shareholder returns over time. Our activity is organised across three complementary strategies.
We partner with founders and executives for the long term, backing businesses from inception or at key inflection points. We bring patient capital, strategic support and deep operational experience to help management teams build enduring businesses.
Minority investments in high-growth businesses with proven models and strong management teams, providing capital and strategic support to scale.
Bespoke financing solutions for businesses that require flexible capital structures, offering attractive risk-adjusted returns with downside protection.
Track Record
Our investment track record reflects a disciplined approach to capital allocation and a long-term focus on compounding value for our investors and partners.
Portfolio Companies
Each investment reflects our conviction in durable business models, strong management and significant long-term growth potential across southern Africa.
Specsavers South Africa is a full franchise optical and audiology retail operation launched in 1993, serving communities across five southern African nations. With 400 stores, the business is one of the region's largest and most trusted providers of affordable professional eye and hearing care. Each store is co-owned and operated by locally licensed optometrists, combining clinical independence with the group's national brand and purchasing scale. Our co-investment reflects deep conviction in resilient, needs-based healthcare retail with strong recurring consumer demand across the region.
FeverTree Finance was founded by St. Thomas Street Investments in 2012 and has organically grown into a large South African consumer finance business. Offering consumer credit, asset finance and franchisee finance solutions, FeverTree is registered as NCRCP19967 and FSP44281 and serves the underbanked segment where traditional credit is limited. Through its growth, FeverTree has made successful investments into both Netcash and PayFlex, extending its reach across the South African fintech ecosystem.
PayFlex is South Africa's leading buy-now-pay-later platform, enabling consumers to split purchases into four interest-free instalments over six weeks. Part of the FeverTree Finance ecosystem, PayFlex is PCI-compliant and has built a rapidly growing merchant network across e-commerce and retail.
Founded in March 2018 in Walmer, Gqeberha by John and J-lee, Jack's Bagels is South Africa's first bagel franchise. From a single artisan bakery it has grown into a multi-province network spanning the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Gauteng and Free State, pioneering a category entirely new to the South African food service market.
One of South Africa's largest payment processing businesses, Netcash has over 21 years of operational history enabling debit order collections, salary and creditor payments, and e-commerce gateway services for businesses of all sizes. Holding PCI DSS Level 1 and ISO 27001 certifications and registered as a PASA Systems Operator, Netcash is a cornerstone of South Africa's payments infrastructure.
Managed Fund
The BCI Worldwide Flexible Fund is managed by Mopane Capital (Pty) Ltd, a South African investment management business in which St. Thomas Street Investments holds a 70% stake. The fund is administered by Fundrock Collective Investments (RF) (Pty) Ltd (formerly Boutique Collective Investments), a registered Collective Investment Scheme management company regulated under the Collective Investment Schemes Control Act, 45 of 2002 (CISCA).
The fund pursues a flexible, unconstrained mandate across global asset classes, with a focus on capital preservation and long-term real returns. Portfolio management is jointly overseen by Chris Dowley and Matthew Walker, who together bring extensive experience across South African and international financial markets.
The fund is available to South African investors and is denominated in South African Rand. Collective investments are generally medium- to long-term investments. The value of investments may go down as well as up, and past performance is not necessarily a guide to future performance.
